Key Stage 3
In each of the Key Stage 3 (KS3) years, students follow one of the schemes of work appropriate to their ability, A, B, C, D or E (getting progressively more difficult). Students are tested regularly throughout this period and changes of set and scheme of work occur at appropriate times. The results of our testing will be available on the go4schools.com website for you to monitor the progress of your child.
As a department we subscribe to mymaths.co.uk. Students should have their own login to this site and homework will be set based upon it. This site is also useful for revision. One homework per week is normally set. This may vary in nature, but will generally be based on the unit of learning students are currently covering.
United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) challenges: Each year we enter 140 students from Years 7 to 11 in the UKMT challenges. Some example questions and past papers can be found here.
The Key Stage 3 (KS3) ICT Curriculum covers Year 7 and 8. Year 7 focuses on developing organisational and planning skills whilst building up students' confidence at using a variety of text and picture based software. Work is based around a student booklet for each unit which includes level descriptors and teacher feedback so that parents can see how a child is progressing and what could be done to improve. Year 8 uses this basis to add in work on data handling, collation, modelling and combining pieces of software for longer projects.
Within ICT there is a range of both creative and technical units. Students will develop their skills to work with images, create webpages and communicate written information. Other units are more focused on core technical competencies such as data handling, programming and database design.
Outside of normal lessons
Students with an interest can take advantage of opportunities through the Junior Technician scheme. In the past these students have provided first line technical support to staff within the school, researched and suggested purchasing decisions and have produced presentations and videos for a number of events.
Key Stage 4
In Year 10 and 11 we are focused on teaching the GCSE course to enable students to gain their highest grade but also to achieve a deep understanding of the concepts involved in this level of study. It is important that students are given a balance between creative, inspiring teaching and focused preparation for these very important examinations. We will maintain the policy of entering pupils for examinations when we feel it is in the best interests of that pupil which might be in year 10 or year 11.
Students will either sit a Foundation or Higher tiered paper depending on their ability.

Maths Drop-in Clinic: On Thursdays afterschool the Maths Dept offer a drop-in session in Mr Holders room to help with any difficulties students are having with class or homework. Students are also encouraged to attend when approaching GCSE exams for extra revision support.
The Key Stage 4 Curriculum begins in year 9 and uses the Level 2 BTEC First Extended Certificate. This is equivalent to 2 GCSE grades A*-C. It is 100% coursework and completed in one year using homework and classwork. Homework is set weekly and is available through a set of homework booklets. The course is highly flexible with last year’s leavers using up to 6 from a range of 11 different units. In June 2012, the department began offering the newly created computing GCSE.
