Key Stage 3
In Key Stage 3 (KS3) we offer a maths course tailored to the ability of each individual. The 5 courses A to E, which get progressively more challenging, build on the foundation skills mastered at Primary school and prepare pupils well for the needs of their GCSE courses beginning in Year 10. Pupils are tested termly throughout this period and changes of set and scheme occur at appropriate times. The results of our testing will be available on the go4schools.com website for you to monitor the progress of your child.

In September year 7 pupils will initially be taught in mixed ability groups before being set into broad ability sets after October half term. Topics covered in the first few weeks will include:
- Geometry; tessellations, angles in polygons, properties of shapes.
- Number; decimals, factors, prime numbers, highest common factors and lowest common multiples.
A range of resources will be used so that pupils of all abilities will be able to make good progress.
As a department we subscribe to hegartymaths.com. Pupils should have their own login to this site and most homework will be set from it. This site is excellent because for every task set there is a teaching video supporting the content. One homework per week is normally set. This may vary in nature, but will generally be based on the unit of learning pupils are currently covering.

Every year we enter 120 pupils from Years 7 to 11 in both the junior and intermediate United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) challenges. Some example questions and past papers can be found here.
We also encourage pupils to enter the Southampton University Cipher Challenge, details of which can be found here.
At Key Stage 3, in every year, each pupils will complete a programming project, an e-safety module and digital literacy module. Pupils are also required to complete a range of technical modules to develop their basic computing and IT skills. This includes the basic skills to use desktop publishing software such as Office 365 and to develop good IT habits. Currently the department teaches both block-based programming and text-based programming using; Scratch, Micro-Bit & Python. Pupils will also explore more widely the functions of computers, the history of computers and a range of contemporary computing topics such as; The Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and 3D Computer Generated Images (CGI).
Pupils are taught to problem solve through logical thinking and transfer these skills to other aspects of their lives. We aim to encourage them to widen their learning through practical application in a variety of activities. For example, their knowledge and skills can be challenged through national events such as the Bebras Challenge and the Oxford Computing Challenge, both of which are held once a year.

- Bebras Challenge - The Bebras Computing Challenge introduces computational thinking to pupilss. It is organised in over 40 countries and designed to get pupils all over the world excited about computing. Pupils have the potential to make it to the second stage which is at the University of Oxford on a weekend.
- TCS Oxford Computing Challenge - The TCS Oxford Computing Challenge has been created by TCS and Oxford University. It is an invitation event which aims to encouragepupils who have achieved a top 10% score in the UK Bebras Challenge to develop their skills further and produce programmed solutions to computational thinking problems
- Python Website (Version 3.7) – We Currently use Python v3.7 in school and pupils might wish to do some additional python themselves at home. The program is free to public for download and use.
Key Stage 4
In Year 10 and 11 we are focused on teaching the GCSE course to enable pupils to gain their highest grade but also to achieve a deep understanding of the concepts involved in this level of study. It is important that pupils are given a balance between creative, inspiring teaching and focused preparation for these very important examinations.
Pupils will either sit a Foundation or Higher tiered paper depending on their ability. The examination board we use is AQA.
There are termly assessments and pupils will sit a mock examination, usually in November of year 11.
As a department we have subscribed to hegartymaths.com. Although other useful sites are CorbettMaths and MrBartonMaths.
One homework per week is normally set. This may vary in nature but will generally be based on the unit of learning pupils are currently covering.
We offer the AQA Further Maths Level 2 qualification as an afterschool enrichment. This gives pupils the opportunity to sample a little A level material before 6th form.
We also offer Foundation maths and Higher maths booster sessions during enrichment for year 11 pupils.
We offer this 2 year course as an option in key stage 4. Statistics, while having some overlap with GCSE Mathematics, is also a discipline in its own right. It teaches pupils how to make fair comparisons between data sets, to look and compare trends in data and to begin to see beyond the raw figures to identify if any misrepresentation might have occurred.
We use the Edexcel examination board.
Pupils will have termly assessments and a mock examination in November of year 11.
We offer this 2 year course as an option in key stage 4. This Computer Science course, through the AQA exam board, builds upon existing knowledge gained in key stage 3. Pupils will have the opportunity to explore in more depth topics such as; how computers function, the impact of computing on our wider world and programming knowledge that introduces and prepares pupils interested in heading into the digial industry.
