SLT Update Sept 27th 2018

27th September 2018

  • Students celebrated European Day of Languages on Wednesday with a range of activities during tutor time. On the day when people across the continent celebrate the more than 6000 languages spoken around the world, not just in Europe, students took part in quizzes about the history and origins of language and learnt to say ‘hello’ in a number of different tongues.
  • Ms Cooke and the England Ladies Deaf Rugby Team had an exciting time in Bulgaria last weekend. After travelling to Sofia, both the men’s and women's England teams defeated their Bulgarian opponents, with the men winning 38-25 and the women drawing their first game 25-25 and winning the second 14-5, leading to a series win for the women. This is on the back of their win against Australia in April.
  • Miss King has emailed parents of KS4 students with a list of study guides and work books for English Language & Literature that can be purchased from Amazon. She has stressed to all GCSE students that it is imperative they engage with revision/wider reading/research as part of home-learning, as both English courses are full of content and are rigorous. Year 10 have started studying Romeo and Juliet / A Christmas Carol and therefore should already be undertaking wider reading and research in connection with these. Year 11 should be revising all modules. There are plenty of helpful websites including Sparknotes, Cliffnotes, Litcharts, as well as the revision guides listed in her previous email. Teachers have also provided revision materials. Reminder: Year 11s need to be ready to do their GCSE Spoken Language assessments from the week beginning 15th October.
  • Former student and current History teacher Charlotte Joyce has been accepted on to the prestigious Leadership Legacy Project, run by SSAT, the Schools, Students and Teachers network. She will be part of a group of future education leaders from across the country, who have been designated as SSAT Leadership Fellows through showing the potential to become an outstanding school leader. As part of the same project, the SSAT invite current head teachers to mentor the Leadership Fellows and Mr Holmes has this year been asked to be one of these Leadership Experts. He will help his mentees by sharing his knowledge and experience of school leadership and by helping them reflect on their practice and develop their own vision.
  • The Year 8 boys’ Rugby Team bounced back from a defeat at St. Bede’s last week with an impressive 30-25 victory at home to Linton Village College yesterday. Mr Barlow was pleased with their progress, saying ‘the boys played much better and are starting to build a good team spirit’. Levi was man of the match with several good tries; a special mention also to Year 11 GCSE PE student Ollie Habergham for his coaching expertise.
  • Finally, if you are considering a career in teaching, please do attend the Open Evening at Comberton Village College at 7pm on Wednesday, 17th October. See the flyer on our Facebook page for more information.

Have a lovely weekend.

Regina Lawrence
