SLT Update December 7th

7th December 2018

  • Our Christmas Concert is at 7pm on Wednesday 12 December, when we will be celebrating Christmas with musical performances featuring the MVC Choir, Orchestra, Pop/Rock Band and Jazz Band. Tickets are available from the College reception and cost £4 (Adult) and £2 (Concessions). Come along and invite your friends!
  • Congratulations to Daisy King who won a silver medal in the pre-cadet girls’ u44kg category in the National Judo Championships last weekend.

  • Charity news from the Head and Prefect team: The votes have been counted and the charities that we will be supporting for Charities Morning and over the rest of the year are:
  • Teenage Cancer Trust
  • Allyance
  • Jimmy’s Night Shelter (Cambridge)

Thank you to all of you who took part in this vote and we look forward to announcing the money raised with grand totals in the Summer Term. Students can keep an eye out for the totalisers that are being organised by prefects for updates throughout the year.

  • On Tuesday morning, 25 students went to the district cross country at Netherhall School. There were some fantastic results, but special congratulations go to Gethin Rogers who came seventh in his race and Annabelle Helme, who came second in her race. Both these students go through to the next round where they will represent Cambridge and District against the other districts in Cambridgeshire in January. Well done to everyone.

  • On Tuesday evening, Henry Silver and Joe Turkington played for Cambridge & District Football Team against Chelmsford at Histon Football Club. Cambridge won 3-2 and they now go through to the fourth round of the ESFA competition. Good luck!
  • Yesterday, the PE department took 31 students to Twickenham, London, for the annual Cambridge versus Oxford Varsity Rugby match. The pupils got a chance to watch both the ladies’ and men’s matches, which were both aired live on TV.  Cambridge women the ladies' contest but lost the men's match.

  • Mr Holmes and Miss Joyce attended the SSAT National Conference on Wednesday and Thursday this week. There were some excellent keynote speeches on the theme of creativity from speakers such as Will Gompertz, the BBC Arts Correspondent, David Lamby MP and Amanda Spielman, Ofsted Chief Inspector, as well as variety of stimulating workshops.
  • On Wednesday, I attended the Cambridgeshire Secondary Heads Meeting, during which Head Teachers discussed SEND funding in Cambridgeshire with a representative from the local authority. Also, on Wednesday, I was delighted to attend the presentation for our recently achieved International Schools Award at the Houses of Parliament, which included a speech from Damian Hinds, Secretary of State for Education. A varied day!

  • Our Year 7s are currently doing their CAT online profiling. This will enable us to find out more about their overall learning profile to help us support and challenge them better in lessons. This information will go alongside their KS2 results and internal MVC assessments.
  • Our Year 11s have completed their mocks and so thoughts have moved to Post-16 applications. To help with this, each one will have a meeting with the member of the Senior Leadership Team where we will discuss their predicted grades and Post-16 choices.
  • Next week’s basketball matches: Year 9 v Impington Wed 12th at home and Year 11 v Impington Wed 12th away.
  • With Christmas just around the corner, we will use any excuse for a Christmas jumper! On Friday 14th December, students and staff can swap their school jumper for one more befitting the season with a 50p donation to Save the Children. THIS IS NOT A FULL NON-UNIFORM DAY; the only part of the uniform that can be changed is the jumper. So, glittery, fair isle, Nordic or flashing lights, let’s celebrate the season!
  • Our Christmas Lunch is on Tuesday 18th and costs £3.50. Please be aware that on this day the only choices on this day will be turkey or vegetarian option, all the trimmings, a delicious pudding and a drink. Yum.
  • Please find on our Facebook page an invitation for all parents of children with SEND to the annual Pinpoint 2019 Conference on Friday 1st February 2019 at Burgess Hall, St Ives, Cambridgeshire. There are workshops plus the opportunity to book a 1:1 slot with a service professional. Lunch is FREE for parents/carers too! Have a good weekend.
