7th November 2022

Food Technology

The work on the new food technology facilities were completed over the half term holiday.  We now have a large, fully-equipped practical room, large storage room, and classroom including a demonstration area.  Students are looking forward to being able to use the new practical room for food preparation practical lessons.

New Enrichment Clubs

This half term students can enjoy two new enrichment clubs. If your child is interested in either of these sessions, please ask them to go along and register with the teacher.

  • Songwriting Enrichment: Songwriting enrichment will take place on Mondays after school in Mu1 and Thursday lunchtimes in Mu4 with Mr Ovenden. This group is open to any musicians, singers and music lovers. All years and musical backgrounds are welcome! Students can unleash their creativity and learn how to write top quality pop songs with catchy melodies, meaningful lyrics and commercial song structure. No experience required.

  • KS3 Rugby Enrichment: Due to popular demand, we have added a KS3 Rugby enrichment session which will now take place on a Tuesday after-school.

Science Club Wins Award

Congratulations to MVC Science Club for successfully gaining the STEM Clubs Bronze Quality Mark Award from STEM Learning in recognition of all the amazing hard work and brilliant things that were done in science club last year.

This term the Science Club have been continuing their NASA-inspired events by developing and creating landers to successfully land raw eggs from a 2 metre height. We are all excited to see whose design can achieve this goal and maybe even exceed it! Time will tell which group comes out triumphant.  There are plenty more exciting events planned for the coming weeks.

This week our Science Noticeboard has been updated on Chemistry of Fireworks for Bonfire Night!

RareFest22 is taking place in Cambridge on 25th & 26th November. RAREfest22 is a 2-day rare disease inspired festival with interactive exhibits, talks, film and art, showcasing ground-breaking science, visionary technology and pioneering organisations, improving lives and bringing hope to those affected by rare conditions. More information here.

Learning First Aid

On Wednesday, Grace (Year 9) had a first aid training session with Ms Goldsmith who is FREC4 qualified first responder, who volunteers with St John Ambulance. Grace is working towards her AQA First Aid qualification. After observing the first aid demonstrations and learning about the DRABC response she was able to apply basic first aid techniques on a fake cut, put an arm in a sling and learnt about the recovery position. Thanks to Ms Goldsmith for helping Grace with her qualification and also to Mrs Shakespeare who did a great job acting as the patient!

Post-16

On Tuesday, Abi Smith from the University of Hertfordshire came in to talk to students in Years 9 and 11 about going to University, what qualifications they need, types of courses available, locations, costs and benefits. Students asked lots of questions and found the sessions very informative.

Physical Education

The Year 11 boys football team started their pursuit of the England Schools FA Cup on Wednesday with a 2nd round game at home to Sawston. Our success in the County Cup last year earnt us a bye through round one and we hosted a local team in Sawston who were keen to topple us as county champions. We took a little while to find our feet, but some good pressing from Joseph and George forced an error from the goalkeeper and gave us the lead. George followed this up with some good footwork and created other openings with help from the industrious Callum and Tye. We eventually went 3-0 up, but opened the door slightly for the opposition by conceding shortly before the interval with a visiting player heading home from a corner.

We faced a tough task in the second half as the wind picked up and Sawston began to pin us in our half. They scored a good goal from just outside the area and huffed and puffed, but we showed similar resolve to that of our cup final back in the summer term. Well done to George for his hat trick.  Speaking of our cup final, we will play that opponent (Longsands) again in the next round –  date to be confirmed.
